Pete approached the rack of reading glasses with trepidation, but as soon as he tried on the first pair, he was convinced. “Holy crap. I had no idea.”

“See?”

He laughed. “Now I can.”

He ended up settling on a frameless pair, which I liked because they didn’t obliterate any of his gorgeous face. I said, “You should have a spare. One pair for work and one for home.”

We shopped a bit longer, then walked home. Wilshire Boulevard was busy, as always. I said, “How many people in Alamogordo?”

“About thirty thousand.”

“It would feel weird to live in such a small town.”

“Oceanside was a small town when you were a kid, wasn’t it?”

“Mm - when I was born, maybe, but the population exploded over the following decade. And it definitely wasn’t as tiny as 30,000.”

“Barstow’s smaller than Alamogordo.”

“Must be why Steve feels so at home in Alamogordo. He’s used to a town of that size.”

“Are you sure you could live in a desert town? You’re such a water rat.”

I shrugged. “It’s not like I’ll never see the ocean again. My family will be in Oceanside for decades to come. Except for our friends, I wouldn’t mind leaving LA behind.”

“You never intended to end up here in the first place.”

“I wouldn’t have turned Los Angeles down, if Ethan and I had stayed together, but living in LA was not on my wish list. When I thought of the future in those days I imagined us back in Berkeley.”

“If you had it to do over again, after your breakup with Ethan, would you have gone to library school?”

I sighed. “That’s a tough question. Maybe not. I was thinking today how much I relish the work of a historian. But if I hadn’t moved to LA, I would never have met Liz. I might not have met you.”

He grinned. “You’d have met me. Kevin would have arranged that somehow.”

We turned the corner onto our street and saw Ruby Cross leading a couple through the Carters’ front gate. I said, “She’s not waiting until the open house.”

“Of course not. Maybe she’ll sell it before then.”

As we passed the gate on the way to our own, I heard the woman of the couple say, “The neighbors have such attractive gardens.”

Ruby said, “Oh, yes. The neighbors here are lovely people.”

We both snickered.
